Evaluating Possible Research Resources

For our Courage project, we are expected to utilize some sources. But before we can use them, we have to evaluate them to make sure that they are credible. We are going to use the C.R.A.P. test. The C.R.A.P. test is a way to decide if the resource you are using is credible and/or valid. It stands for:

Currency - If the information in the resource is up to date. It depends on your subject what 'up to date' really means. If it is on a topic that happened a while ago and the information hasn't really changed, a resource that hasn't been made quite so recently would be perfectly fine to use. If the subject is something that changes constantly and has new information still being brought to light, you would want to use a source that has been made or updated more recently.

Reliability - You should check for the kind of information included in the source. Another thing you should watch out for is if the source is opinionated. If it is biased, you can't be sure if all the facts are being given to you. You have to choose a source that is impartial so that you can get the full story. The author of the source should also give references to the sources that they used to create what you are using.

Authority - You should know who the author of you source is. Once you know this, you should try to find the credentials of the author or try to find out about their background. Also check for the publisher/sponsor of the source and if they are reputable.

Purpose/Point of View - Is the author trying to sell you something through the resource that you are using? Are they heavily opinionated in the information that they are giving you? What is the purpose of the source that you are using.

For my project, instead of handing out pads/tampons and other hygiene projects, I have decided to just raise money to give to a homeless charity or organization that is focused on mainly helping homeless women. So, for my research I have found websites with lists of homeless charities. One of these websites is ShelterList.com, which is exactly what it sounds it is. Using this website you can easily and efficiently find a list of homeless shelters in your area. It is completely free. I seems pretty current, as you can enter new charities if you find any. It is also reliable because it just gives you the shelters as they are. As for authority, I can't find the creators of the website but the site looks very reputable. The website isn't trying to sell anything and the purpose is only to help people that are searching for any homeless shelters in the United States.
